METEOROS No. 06/2008

Our cover picture ...

Exactly 100 years ago, on 30 June 1908, the inhabitants around Vanavara saw a dazzlingly bright fireball that disappeared over the taiga, then exploded loudly and made the ground shake. Only in 1927 did a scientific expedition led by Leonid Alexeyevich Kulik reach the region. The picture shows the devastated taiga that Kulik's expedition found. Today we know this incident as the ‚Tunguska event’. In the next issue of METEOROS, an article will report on new and old theories about the Tunguska event.
