METEOROS No. 01/2010

Our cover picture ...

... shows a complete 42.7g meteorite from the Chergach fall of 2 or 3 July 2007, which took place during daytime. A more precise date of the fall could not be determined, because the nomads living there named both days as possible dates of the fall. In total, more than 100 kg of meteoritic material fell in northern Mali. The Chergach meteorites are rich in iron (H4). The meteorite shown has a metallic ‚nose’ (roughly in the middle of the visible meteorite surface in the picture) that protrudes from the melted surface. © André Knöfel
