METEOROS No. 08/2019

Our cover picture ...

This summer there were several intense purple lights caused by aerosols from various forest fires in the Northern Hemisphere, mainly those in Canada and Siberia. These not only enhance light scattering but also provide a kind of screen on which the shadows of distant elevations or clouds are projected. Since the particles spread over the entire Northern Hemisphere and can remain there for several weeks, unusual purple lights can still be expected. The photo was taken by Claudia Hinz in Schwarzenberg on the evening of 23.08.2019.
