Unternebensonnen (EE45/46)

Description

EE45/46/47 Light Path
EE45/46/47 - Subsun
Crystal type:
  • Plate crystals
Orientation:
  • Base horizontal
Light path:
  • Refraction on 2 side surfaces and reflection on lower base surface
Occurrence:
  • rare (only visible below the horizon)

Origin

The formation differs from the sundog in that the light is totally reflected at the lower base of the floating plates. Halo phenomena below the horizon can only be observed when there are also enough ice crystals below the horizon. Good conditions for this are provided in the mountains or from an airplane.
