Explanation
The alpenglow is due to scattered light during sunset and sunrise. It is nothing more than the reflection of the evening glow in the mountains. The alpenglow is further enhanced by the purple fringe of the twilight, which is the colored border at the upper end of the Earth's shadow rising in the east after sunset.
The alpenglow becomes particularly colorful when it has rained shortly before sunset, so the rock faces are still wet and glisten in the light of the setting sun. The intensity of the alpenglow is naturally also increased with snow-covered slopes.
