Unexplained Halo Types

Introduction

Sometimes phenomena are observed that cannot be attributed to any known type of halo. Such observations are rare but well documented through digital photography and modern image processing techniques. However, common theories often reach their limits in explanations, so that the phenomena cannot be unequivocally explained. Furthermore, lens flares, artifacts, impurities, strong editing, and other factors can distort the images. This way, the photo shows a phenomenon that actually did not occur. This section shows some of these phenomena.

Unresolved Arc at the 35° Ring

On 27.03.2013, Andreas Möller photographed a pyramidal halo phenomenon near Berlin. During the subsequent evaluation of the recordings and after the application of various image processing methods, a parry arc was visible in several photos. This appears to lie along the 35° ring. In the initial shots, the arc forms a boundary between the cloud layers, and within the arc a distinct brightening (similar to a rainbow) can be seen. In the 3rd photo, it is clearly seen that the parry arc does not fit into the geometry of the optics. To this day, the formation of this arc is unexplained. Most likely, it is an artifact of the strong image processing.

Unknown Phenomenon in Romania

On 01.09.1986, an unknown phenomenon was recorded in Romania. The phenomenon is discussed in the following article. The cause of the so-called "Romanian Halo" is most likely due to a reflection in the camera optics, so that it is not a halo.
