The Halo Phenomenon of Miesbach, Upper Bavaria

Observer: Thomas Klein, Miesbach Date: 01.11.2014 Time and Solar Altitude:
  • 11:00 - 12:30 CET - Sundogs and later Parry arc (Solar altitude: 28°)
  • 12:30 - 13:15 CET - Main phase: up to 12 halo types simultaneously (Solar altitude: 25°)
  • 13:15 - 17:00 CET - Bright sundogs and circumzenithal arc repeatedly
Initially, there was an almost complete horizontal circle with both 120° sundogs, as well as the 22° ring with both sundogs visible. Shortly thereafter, the circumzenithal arc, supralateral arc, and solar bow appeared. After relocating to get a 360° panoramic view, the upper tangent arc, Parry arc, Lowitz arcs, the upper two Tape arcs, and the 46° ring became visible. The intensity remained fairly constant. After about 15 minutes, the supralateral arc, the two Tape arcs, the 46° ring, as well as the 120° sundog and the solar bow disappeared. In contrast, all Lowitz arcs were clearly visible. From 13:15 onwards, the phenomenon dissolved, and only a maximum of 4 halo types could be seen simultaneously. After image processing with the RB method, the rare 46° contact arcs became visible. Location Data

Location: The halo phenomenon was observed in Miesbach (Upper Bavaria). The observation was later continued in a field northwest of Miesbach near the Mangfall (river). It was a (for the month of November) warm day with 15°C in the sun. The halo phenomenon was observed exclusively in cirrus clouds.
